A Compassionate Manager Helps A Worker Address His Hazardous Drinking After A Ruined Relationship
Barry dropped out of high school when he was seventeen years old and eventually found employment at a local paint manufacturer. For the past eleven years he has gained a reputation as a hard-working and reliable person who almost never calls off work because of sickness.

Barry's boss heard about all of this from Barry's co-workers and from Human Resources. So one Tuesday afternoon he invited Barry into his office. He told Barry that he had recently noticed an extreme change in his behavior, attendance, sick time, and in his work performance.
"Barry I am not an authority about alcohol facts and I'm not especially all that knowledgeable about alcoholism facts, but I have personally seen quite a few of my friends and relatives go through some really painful problems because of their abusive and excessive drinking. My suggestion is that you take time and learn more facts about alcohol and what alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency can do to an individual."

Even though Barry didn't necessarily feel any less depressed or feel better about the hurt he still has about Carol, he felt comfort knowing that his boss and his fellow employees wanted what's best for him and cared about him. This gave him some emotional relief for the first time in more than a few weeks and he truthfully felt some hope that he would get his life back on track.
