A Health And Physical Education Instructor Teaches Her Pupils About The Relevant Issues Involved In Alcoholism Signs
Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most popular co-ed high school in the district. Even though she had been teaching for only two or three years, she had already established a reputation as a teacher with instructional approaches that stimulated and encouraged students to think and to learn.
For example, one Friday afternoon at 1:00 she addressed the students in her classroom and said the following: "For the next four or five days we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a more broad-based standpoint and we are also going to learn about several of the most common signs of alcoholism from a less general and more specific point of view."
"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will beyond doubt validate that a drinker with a drinking problem is an individual who is alcohol dependent, but the more signs that an individual manifests, the greater the probability that he or she is an alcohol dependent person."
Miss Jackson then informed the the students that each pupil would be responsible for investigating three alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the class by way of a thirty minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were discussed and presented in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked the pupils in her class to go over the list and rank the top six alcohol addiction signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After around twenty minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and explained to the pupils in her class that after she assesses the numbers, she will present her findings the morning of the next school day.
Miss Jackson asked the students in her classroom to go over the information she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, questions, or issues. Within 40 or 50 seconds, virtually every pupil in the class raised her or his hand. It was noticeable that the pupils had some issues, questions, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For example, virtually every person in the classroom had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism experts, specifically, "Do you feel unusually nauseous when you refrain from drinking?"
Miss Jackson then told her pupils why this answer was the most unambiguous indicator of alcohol dependency. She emphasized the fact that the most important difference between alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.
Basically this means that when an individual who is alcohol dependent abruptly stops drinking, she or he will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the significance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the alcohol addicted individual, the pupils started to grasp the essential difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.
A few minutes later the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Based on the excitement exhibited by the pupils when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson recognized that she had motivated and stimulated the students in her class to stop and think about a critical social problem and health issue that exists in our society.
