A Ninth Grade Male Student Drinks Excessively With His Cronies, Experiences An Alcohol Overdose, And Learns That Listening In Class Can Make A Difference

Andy was a ninth grader who commonly seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had an adventurous personality and regularly wanted to do what his older brothers were doing for fun. The main holdup with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were therefore legally able to drive a car and to consume alcohol.

Andy, however, had a hard time accepting the truth that as a fifteen-year-old person he should not be drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, however, Andy frequently drank with his buddies after school, particularly on the weekends.

One weekend, Andy was invited to drive around with some of his older friends. One of his friends was old enough to purchase alcohol. After purchasing some beer, wine coolers, and wine, Andy and all of the guys went to a recreational area and drank for around two hours.

After drinking roughly five alcoholic beverages, Andy started to feel woozy and then vomited. When he became unconscious on the baseball field, one of his friends called 911 for assistance. It was fortunate that the call for medical help was made because when his buddies went to the hospital to see Andy, they learned that Andy had been suffering from alcohol poisoning symptoms. In short, Andy had suffered through an alcohol overdose.

After receiving alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was quite surprised to discover that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had approximately five or ten drinks. When he told this to the attending healthcare professional at the hospital, however, the healthcare professional told Andy that drinking five or ten cans of beer over a two or three hour period of time could in reality be significantly more alcohol than can be processed by the body. The doctor further conveyed how too much alcohol can cause the brain to shut down an individual's respiratory system and that when this takes place, a person can expire.

This was the first warning to Andy that he was drinking in a hazardous way and that there is a price tag for such behavior. The healthcare professional told Andy that he was a lucky young man because he almost died from an alcohol overdose the previous night.

The physician also conversed with Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol rehabilitation for Andy. His parents were relieved that Andy was safe and sound and told the doctor that they would follow through on getting Andy alcohol therapy.

While conversing with his parents, Andy told them that there must be a solid reason why he did not perish and that he felt a sense of thankfulness that he was still alive. He also notified his parents that the strangest part about the entire drinking episode was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the past week at school.

At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Johnson, was saying didn't seem to make too much sense to Andy. Since he almost died, then again, he felt that he should have listened more closely in class and applied what he had learned to his personal life.

Andy told his parents that he couldn't wait to go back to the classroom and apologize to Mr. Johnson for not paying better attention to a topic that was as important as learning about alcohol poisoning.
