A Young Male Needs Counseling For His Acute Depression, Relationship Issues, And For His Alcoholism And Drug Addiction
About eight months ago I had breakfast with a thirty-three-year-old male named Benjamin who experiences severe depression, has relationship issues, and who is dependent on alcohol and drugs. As stated by Benjamin, it is his alcoholism and drug addiction and his severe depression that has had the most to do with his endless relationship problems.
As affirmed by Benjamin, he is so crushed by his relationship issues and by both of his medical conditions that he in essence has no aspiration to do much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin completed four semesters of graduate school in law.
Benjamin's condition makes me question if he is an example of an individual who can address his chemical dependency and drinking problems and do something positive about these issues. Or, to the contrary, if he is someone who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets drug and alcohol addiction treatment that results in long-term recovery.
It may be asked how treatment would help his drug and alcohol dependency. First of all, there are some recently discovered doctor-prescribed meds that can help Benjamin through his withdrawal symptoms, through the alcohol and alcohol detox process, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in counseling he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the various stages of alcoholism.
Third, Benjamin would learn to admit the fact that there is utterly nothing positive about drug addiction and careless and excessive drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy conditions is the map to legal problems, poor work and school performance, shattered relationships, financial difficulties, deteriorating health, and possibly a premature death. Fourth, treatment for his relationship problems and his depression might help him deal with these psychological difficulties more successfully and perhaps create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in treatment he could also learn more about the different symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.
Due to the fact that Benjamin doesn't have the ambition to achieve much of anything in his life, it is plain to see that he desperately needs a little hope for a better lifestyle. And the sad thing is that hope is virtually everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the treatment he requires for his intense depression and addiction and remain in his treatment protocol.
Benjamin is simply too young to be defeated in life. He doesn't comprehend this at the moment but if he can learn how to remove himself from drugs and alcohol through drug and alcohol rehabilitation and get the treatment he needs for his severe depression, he can redirect his life and begin living with passion, direction, and with self-respect.
More solid relationships, constructive change, self esteem, and a wonderful life are certainly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can get motivated to get the professional rehab he needs, follow through with his therapy program, live his life in a healthy and addiction-free manner, and learn how to foster a more positive attitude about his life.
