CAUTION - Is The "Coquitlam Best Buy" Actually Running An Extended Warranty SCAM?
There I am sitting at the Geek Squad counter at the Coquitlam Best Buy. I'm waiting to grab my PC which was set with Norton 360 and working out an issue with a content blocker. The salesman is scratching down numbers trying to sell a couple next to me 3 computers for their children for Christmas.
Alright Sir - he says. So you have been looking at this total $89 for Norton 360 $20 for recovery discs x 3, plus $30 each for a 2 year extended warranty package. So that is $90 TOTAL for the 2 years extended warranty that will cover All 3 Computer systems.
$30? Pardon me? Did I hear that correct?
I lean in a little more so I can hear the pitch as well. He repeats the numbers back to the wife who is calculating all the totals and repeats $30 x 3 for a two year extended warranty for the three PCs.
What the heck? I interrupt the sales pitch.
Pardon me, sorry to interrupt, but did I just hear you say that a two year extended warranty is $30?
Indeed that is correct he states. My boss authorized that.
Really? I say. You mean the very same lady that just charged me $190 for a 3 year extended warranty?
I call the lady over and show her my bill. What sort of business are you individuals running here? I say.
So let me understand this directly... a 2 year extended warranty for THREE computers is $90 and a 3 year warranty for ONE computer is $190?
I ask to speak with the General Manager and then the lady leaves for around 15 minutes.
She returns and says that the General Manager has provided me a 50% discount on my extended warranty package. I ask to speak with him personally and she has disappeared for another 10 minutes. By this time I'm thinking to myself, these guys are total fraudsters.
The General Manager comes over and I put out my hand to shake his hand and then he stares at me with this stern look and pulls an Arnold Schwarzenegger "HE MAN" grip and just about crushes my hand. He takes this really stern pose like we're gonna have a "scrap" or something.
What is this - intimidation tactics at the "Coquitlam Best Buy" - I'm considering?
He proceeds to provide me a $50 refund and climbs into this volume buying spiel and explains to me that if I buy 3 computers I will get this type of discount as well. By this time - I'm thinking to myself, these guys are complete ripoffs. So I proceed to the checkout to re-crunch the figures in my head to try and figure what has just gone down.
I call the General Manager over again and say - Did I hear you just provide me $50 off when you're Manager just offered me 50% discounted price?
$50.....50% - I might have gotten the numbers confused he says.
I don't think so. I ask for a full refund. All I can say is BUYER BEWARE!! If I hadn't witnessed it personally I would have never believed it could possibly happen for real.
What I believe is that the sales managers are trained to eye up the buyer - look at their clothing, their shoes and their jewelry to determine what they feel they can fraud for each deal and what they can get away with. Evidently at the "Coquitlam Best Buy" - a 2 year warranty could go for as low as $30 if you're a couple buying 3 computer systems and if you're a business man wearing a Rolex, you can expect to pay $190 for 3 years. WOW!
Information About The "Best Buy" Extended Warranty Packages, Are They Trick Or What? Unless I witnessed it first hand I would never have believed it. I paid $190 at Coquitlam Best Buy for a 3 year warranty and 24 hours later witnessed a sales rep pitching a 2 year warranty package for 3 computers for $30 each.
