It's pretty ironic and sad how our priorities at times backfire. The first time I bought my children audio books on cd was when I was traveling on a business trip for a few weeks. I had been reading to my little girl from the same book every night for a week or two, and we were nearly halfway finished with it. She was very unhappy to see me go, and I knew that she would truly miss that story. On a whim, I went to the neighborhood audio book store and found out that I could get a copy of it. At first, she was a tad bit uneasy about listening to the children audio-book. She explained to me that she wished to hear me reading it, not some tape recorder. Nevertheless, when she puzzled out that I was not going to stay no matter how much she begged and pleaded, she relented and made the decision to listen to the children audio books.
She actually truly enjoyed it. I like to think that she still likes the way I read more than she enjoys children books on cd, but I bet it is a close call. The children audio-book readers are excellent. My diction isn't bad, and I'm a pretty expressive reader, but these are true trained performers. Your average run-of-the-mill father just simply cannot compete! They know precisely how to read kids books to make them exciting and engaging, keeping your kids on the edge til the very last page. Although my daughter is still unhappy when I go out of town, the children books on tape make my trip just a bit easier on her. Both of us are very pleased about that.
